Unemployment Rate Reached 12.1 Percent as of November 2016

The unemployment rate having reached 12 percent indicates the highest level of the past seven years. The unemployment rate for the young population (15-24 years) escalated to 22.6%

Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) disclosed the unemployment data for the month of November 2016. The data disclosed by TÜİK displays that the unemployment rate in Turkey has reached the maximum level of the past seven years.

The number of unemployed people at an age of 15 and over reached 3 million 715 thousand overall Turkey increasing by 590,000 people in November 2016 compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate realized as 2.1%. Non-agricultural unemployment has been estimated as 14.3% for the same period increasing by 1.9%.

Youth unemployment rate encompassing the age group between 15 and 24 realized as 22.6% increasing by 3.5%, whereas the proportion for the age group of 15-64 years realized as 12.3 percent increasing by 1.6 points.

The number of employed people reached 27 million 67 thousand in the period of November 2016 increasing by 391,000 compared to the same period last year, with an employment rate of 45.8% displaying no changes. 18.7% of employment realized in the agricultural sector, 19.6% in the industrial sector, 7.4% in the construction sector and 54.2 % in the services sector.

The rate of unregistered employment is 33.3%

On the other hand, employment participation rate realized as 52.1 % increasing by 0.9 points. According to comparison made for the given period, the male employment participation rate realized as 71.9 % increasing by 0.6 percent and the female employment participation rate realized as 32.7 % increasing by 1.1 percent.

The proportion of those who were employed without being registered to any social security institution in the period of November 2016 realized as 33.3 percent increasing by 0.7 points compared to the same period of the previous year.
