5th International Nuclear Power Plants Summit (I)

The Association of Nuclear Engineers (NMD) signed a Cooperation Agreement with the International Korean Nuclear Association (KNA)

The 5th Nuclear Power Plants Summit and Fair organized by the Association of Nuclear Engineers is being held in Pullman İstanbul Convention Center on March 6-7, 2018. The inaugural addresses of the summit were made by Dr. Erol Çubukçu, the Chairman of the Association of Nuclear Engineers and International Nuclear Power Plants Summit; Jonathan Cobb, the Senior Communication Director of World Nuclear Association; and Henri Paillere, the OECD Chairman of Nuclear Development Unit.

Stating that the nuclear power plant projects were intended to free Turkey from external dependence in energy and turn her into an exporter of nuclear energy, Dr. Erol Çubukçu emphasized that prominence in global economy depended on investing in nuclear power. He also noted that taking a share from the rapidly growing nuclear industry in which more than a hundred new reactors are planned to be built worldwide would boost the Turkish economy. Çubukçu further reported that it was possible for Turkish companies to receive a share from nuclear power plant projects as suppliers.

Jonathan Cobb, the Senior Communication Director of World Nuclear Association stated that the demand for power was rapidly increasing worldwide and 1 million MW of additional production was aimed until 2050. He also stated that it was necessary to address the matters of system security, development of global standards and the matter of effective security paradigm in the field of nuclear energy and that this would help harness nuclear technology more effectively.

Pointing out that the total cost of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project was about $20 billion, Konstantin Ryzhak, Akkuyu Nükleer A.Ş. First Deputy General Director in Charge of Operational Management, stated that a significant part of the project's construction works could be performed by Turkish construction companies. Ryzhak said: "We know that Turkish companies are good at construction. "90 percent of construction and 50 percent of installation works will be performed by Turkish companies according to the early estimates." Also stating that they were well aware of the significance of this Project for Turkey, Ryzhak noted that they would try to complete the Project even earlier than prescribed in the intergovernmental agreement.

Makoto Kanda, the Chairman of Sinop Nuclear Power Company, drew attention to the security in nuclear power plants. Kanda noted that security depended on human and organizational factors in addition to technical ones. Kanda also stated that a strong safety and security culture should be developed and security should be facilitated at every stage every day. Kanda said: "A culture of security has been our top priority for Sinop since the very beginning. We will perform the technological and organizational transfer required for it."

Aykut Tor, the Project Manager of Rönesans Endüstri Tesisleri Department of Nuclear Power, stated that they wanted to apply the global experience of Rönesans to the nuclear power plants that were being planned in Turkey. Tor emphasized that nuclear projects would be a new field of experience for Turkish companies.

The Association of Nuclear Engineers signed a Cooperation Agreement with the International Korean Nuclear Association (KNA)

The Association of Nuclear Engineers (NMD) signed a Cooperation Agreement with the International Korean Nuclear Association (KNA) at the Summit. The cooperation covers such headings as human resources, development of nuclear policies, mutual assistance between the companies of the two countries in nuclear supply chain, localization and technology transfer. Accordingly, NMD and KNA will work in cooperation with regard to the projects and opportunities in Turkey and South Korea. Seminars will be organized in Turkey and South Korea for the member companies and specialists of the two associations. Information exchange will be facilitated among the nuclear industry specialists in order to enhance the cooperation between the two countries under the agreement.
