The Unemployment Rate for January 2019 Is 14.7 %

Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) disclosed the labor force data for January 2019. According to the disclosure, the number of unemployed people overall Turkey at the age of 15 and over reached 4,668,000 in January 2019 increasing by 1,259,000 people compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate realized as 14.7 percent increasing by 3.9 points thus making a peak of the last ten years. Non-agricultural unemployment has been estimated as 16.8 % for the same period increasing by 4.1 points. Youth unemployment rate encompassing the age group between 15 and 24 realized as 26.7 percent increasing by 6.8 percent, whereas the figure realized as 15.9 percent in the age group between 15 and 64 increasing by 3.9 percent.

The rate of employment decreased by 1.9 percent

The number of employed realized as 27,157,000 in January 2019 decreasing by 872,000 compared to the same period last year resulting with an employment rate of 44.5 % decreasing by 1.9 points. The number of people working in the agricultural sector decreased by 345,000 in the given period besides a decrease of 526,000 in the number of people working in non-agricultural sectors. 17.0 % of employed people were in the agricultural sector, 19.9 % in the industrial sector, 5.4 % in the construction sector and 57.7 % in the services sector. Upon comparison with the same period last year, the share of the people working in the agricultural sector within the total employment rate decreased by 0.7 points and the share of people employed in the construction sector by 1.6 points with an increase of 2.3 points in the services sector. The share of the industrial sector did not display any changes.

The employment participation rate realized as 52.2 %

The work force reached 31,825,000 people in January 2019 increasing by 387,000 compared to the same period last year and the employment participation rate realized as 52.2 % increasing by 0.1 points. Upon comparison made for the given period, the employment participation rate of the male population realized as 71.1 % increasing by 0.2 points and as 33.6 % for the female population with an increase of 0.4 points. The rate of those subject to informal employment realized as 33.1 %. The rate of people that worked without being registered to any social security institution realized as 33.1 % in January 2019 increasing by 0.6 points compared to the same period last year. Also, the rate of those subject to informal employment in the non-agricultural sector realized as 22.5 % increasing by 0.7 points compared to the same period last year.
