Sinop Nuclear Power Plant Project

President Tayyip Erdoğan said, "We have met with a Picture not in conformity with the initial agreement both in terms of cost and calendar. Of course, it is sad to see Sinop Nuclear Power Plant does not proceed as we planned. Yet, we do not limit our energy cooperation with Japan only with nuclear energy field".

President Tayyip Erdoğan, has commented on Sinop Nuclear Power Plant Project, said that it is not progressed as desired, in an interview with Japan Nikkei Newspaper just before G20 Leaders Summit to be held in Osaka, Japan on 28-29 June. According to Japan perss, President Erdoğan said,

“We are not at the point we desired on Sinop Nuclear Power Planti project. Feasibility report and cost analysis prepared by Japan side has been scrutinized by our Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and other related entities. We have met with a Picture not in conformity with the initial agreement both in terms of cost and calendar. Of course, it is sad to see Sinop Nuclear Power Plant does not proceed as we desired. Yet, we do not limit our energy cooperation with Japan only with nuclear energy field. We think we can work together with Japan in many fields like clean coal, renewable energy, R&D works, human resources and transportation.”

Sinop Nuclear Power Plant Project was planned to be realized by Japan Consortium (MHI-Engie-Itochu) and EÜAŞ partnership within the coverage of Intergovernmental Agreement signed between Turkey and Japan on 3 May 2013.

Project was calculated to cost about USD40 billion

The current status of project was dwelt upon by Japan Press and it was noted that cost of project expected to be about USD 20 billion would be USD 37.5 billion in accordance with the feasibility report TEBA:March 15, 2018. Project’strade partner Itochu Corp. was announced to withdrawn from the Project TEBA:April 27, 2018. In the announcement of MHI, it was noted that assessments still continued on the feasibility report by Turkish Government and Ministry of Energy and they has not withdrawn from Project yet TEBA:1895/ December 6, 2018. No announcement was made by Turkish side until today on the Project to be stopped. President Erdoğan's comments to the effect that “progress could not be achieved on the Project yet, has been the senior most announcement made until now.
